Oh hey, I forgot to put a race report here.

    Race report! )

As for post-5k, I'm continuing with Podrunner and doing their Gateway to 8k program. I just don't want to be too ambitious, because that would be bad. However, I cherish goals of going up to Mackinac either in June or September (hopefully September for the 8-mile!)

    Mind OVER Matter
So, every part of my body hurt today before I went for my run, including the spot that I had surgery at in October..which is random, but expected. I went to run outside with friends and let them know that I was going to shorten my run..from the typical 30 minutes. I was hoping to make it 20 minutes...but anticipated only 15 minutes. Well...running the snow covered paths, starting out barely faster than a walk...I went further...further than I usually go... So weird, why do I have runs like this? When I'm feeling the worst, I run the best. The last 6 runs that I've had have been 30 minutes. I ran for 35 minutes today...in the snow. Twice, I stopped to walk...and walked for less than 30 seconds before I said to myself....you're not a walker, you're a runner....get those legs moving again. It's important to listen to your body, but it's also important to listen to your heart and your brain...not only do they get us through difficult runs...but they also get us through the difficulties in life. Everytime I think of stopping...I think back to the first few weeks of this program..when I wanted nothing more than to be a runner, and how painful it was to run for 1 minute straight...this gets me running again.... I can't stop to walk anymore, that's not me, that was someone else. I feel so good today!

As you can see it's early days for me and I am looking for a piece of advice. I have found that I keep running at the very front end of the treadmill, which means that I am actually scuffing the casing over the tread at the front. My treadmill also has a safety plug in the lower centre of the console and I am reguarly knocking it out with my hand as I am running because I tend to get so close. The speed of the interval that I am running does not seem to make a difference.

Has this been an issue for anyone else and is there something anyone can suggest. At the moment I have wrapped a ribbon over the handles about a half foot away from the console to try to keep me further back. The machine is definately long enough for me (142 cm X 51 cm running mat) But I still seem to keep running right to the front to of the machine.

    My First 5k - Photo

Our first 5k Our first 5k
Here is a picture taken of my husband and I running the last 1/4th mile of the Jingle Bell 5k on 12/12/2009. It was the culmination of hard work after completing the C25k program, and we are now training for a March 8k, The Union-Tribune Race for Literacy 8K Run/Walk, 8 a.m. | Sunday, March 7, 2010, San Diego, CA

    First Post
Hi everyone, I've just completed my first week of the program and so far I am loving it. Hopefully I will be able to keep up with it as I have just confirmed my entry into my first 5K run in the new year (early March)and I am determined to do it! To be fit enough to do this would be a big accomplishment in my life (I've been fit before, but didn't do any running).

Like most newbies I've been reading peoples posts here, which were part of the inspiration to look into and try this program. So thanks in advance and looking forward to your input and assistance as I learn to run for fun.

Couch to 5k Prgram - Completed
I just finished running the last day of the program - 3 miles. I am feeling quite pleased with myself, but I also know it would have been much harder without the support, companionship and encouragement of the folks in this group, especially [info]americanbeauty  so THANK YOU ALL!!!! As someone pointed out, this is just the beginning.... Michele

I forgot that I said I would upload this. Hereit is.

I'm up to 30 min. runs now, and I'm disconcerted because while some runs are effortless, others are very taxing. Same shoes, hydration levels, stretching, and I'm on a treadmill, so I can't figure out why some days are so much harder than others. Any suggestions? Also, I'm having a problem with friction in my brand new Asics 2140s. I think I may need to get new insoles, because I'm already wearing running socks with cushioned soles. Other than these issues, I feel great! lol

    Week 9, Day 2
Another 3 miles done. As is often the case for me, the second workout of the week seems harder than the first, even if it is the same distance. I think it may be because I am better rested coming off a weekend.

One more to go, then on to the One Hour Runner.

    Week 1, Work out 2
I am new to this community and to the C25K. I did my first exercise on Monday and it was really fun. I am not a runner, in any sence of the word, but I felt like the program is really easy to follow so far. I'm so excited to get into it.

Any tips from some people in the middle of the program?

    Week 9, Day 1
Ran 3 miles and it felt pretty good. The rest of the week is the same as today, but I feel pretty confident I can do it. I have been crossing each run off the sheet I printed out when I started and I will scan and post it on Friday.

I really enjoyed this program. The pace was gentle and I had no soreness, injuries or excess fatigue during the entire period. Each time I felt some trepidation about the next step, I found that it was for naught. I never had to push myself to the end of my reserves to do any of the workouts. If I went in with any doubt, I just started off slower than I knew I could do and sped up after the half way point, or one mile or at some point that would ensure me that I could finish the run without collapsing or throwing up. I knew I could always slow down again if I felt too tired.

I found the camaraderie and support here to be especially helpful. There were days when I was not feeling it and wanted to blow off my run, but then I thought "I'll bet [info]americanbeauty is running today and she lives where it's cold!" That would be enough to make me drag myself off the couch. Once I got through the warm-up I was usually OK. Or someone who had finished the program would come back and talk about what they were doing now - how far they were running or about a race they had just run, and it would give me encouragement to finish the program and see where it went from there.

Posting here also kept me accountable. I do not/ did not ant to miss a day posting.

I guess I am feeling a bit sad that it is coming to an end. But it's not over yet, so I'll see you all on Wed.

    Jingle Bell 5k
I did it! I ran my first road race and I'm going to give you a little history and my first Race Report :) (x-posted to my communities)

I started running in September of this year with the Couch to 5k program as an overweight woman who had not been physically active since my elementary tee-ball team. I am still about 50 pounds overweight, but have also lost 50 pounds this year!! I train at around 4 to 4.5 mph depending on the terrain, and finished the 5k in 42.13 today. As I continue to loose weight I will up my speed.

Jingle Bell 5k: It rained overnight in San Diego, quite a rarity, but the sun started to peak out right before the race. We arrived to check in at 7am and the race didn't start til 8am. I picked up my bib and had the most overwhelming feeling of pride to be running my first race, complete with my own bib!! We had little to do but stretch and laugh at all the ridiculous costumes while we waited an hour to begin. My favorites were the running "Santa Elvis" in a red one piece with flair legs, and the gals who dressed up like wind up Christmas toys. Much to my dismay the race started on an incline and didn't level out for about half a mile. At the water station at about 1.5 miles I realized how hard it is to drink and run after spilling about half the cup on my shirt. At mile 2 I was passed by a group of 8 women in a Reindeer Sleigh costume with a Rudolph leading the way and a woman dressed as a Santa leading the rear, pushing a stroller made up to look like a sleigh. All were attached to each other by red velvet ribbon. Ya, that was a bit embarrassing. Approaching mile 3 I heard the wonderful cheers of the crowd. Note to you early finishers and bystanders: you have no idea who helpful your cheers and good wishes are, thank you!!

    finished week 2
I finished Week 2 today. I honestly can't believe I got through it, though Day 3 was surprisingly better than Day 1 this week. My knees have been bothering me, but using my in-between days to just rest has really helped. That, and aspirin. :) They feel like I just need to stretch and pop them, if you know what I mean, but I can't get that to happen and don't want to try too hard for fear of making anything worse. I'm also getting really nervous and afraid for Week 3, but I'm just going to try it and see how I make out. I honestly can't believe I've gotten this far and would definitely feel foolish stopping now or anytime soon! :)

    Week 8 - Finished
Day three was OK. I really wasn't feeling it today and kept putting the run off. I finally decided that if I didn't do it when I did, I would end up putting it off till tomorrow. So I got up and did it. It's rainy here, and sort of cold, but not as cold as Monday. That made it humid in the house. Again grateful for the treadmill. [info]americanbeauty , where are you? Are you snowed in?

Next week is the final week. It went by quickly.

    Week Eight, Day Two
As usual for me, day two was less fun than day one. I felt like I was going too slowly, but I didn't want to speed up too much and risk tiring myself out before I got at least the first two miles knocked out. I compromised by increasing my speed slightly every half mile. I waited till I had 1/2 mile to go to really ramp it up. My run takes more than 30 minutes to complete now, so if I used time instead of distance, I guess I would be done with the program. I am also pretty sure I could run three miles non-stop right now. But I am in no hurry to finish the program. I will be doing either the One Hour Runner or Hal Higdon's Beginner 10k program next. I find I like having a structured plan to follow. It gives me a manageable goal each day and prevents me from trying too hard to do too much.

    Week 6, Day 2
I had to run today on a treadmill. It was very windy here - about 50mph gusts and off and on rain. I never ran seriously on a treadmill before so I wasn't really sure what to expect. I liked it a lot, but I was SO bored. The last 4 minutes of running were hell and they were dragging by. I don't normally experience this feeling when I run outside.

I do have to say though that the treadmill I used was awesome! I got to set my pace and view my calories burned, distance, and my mile pace. WOW - I'm not used to this!! I forced myself to run at a faster pace then I normally would outside and that was really beneficial to me.

So tell me C25Kers, do you normally run outside or on a treadmill?

I've been having some groin pain in the muscles/soft tissue/whatever between my pelvis and inner thigh. I stretch using a butterfly stretch before and after each run and stretch my hips by sitting on my butt with my legs side by side, bent the same direction, and then I switch, if that makes any sense.

Lately I've been having pain in my groin area during runs and then later in the day/night. Sunday night/Monday morning the pain would slightly wake me when I rolled over. I tried to pay special attention to the area before I ran today (30 minutes around the neighborhood) but I still felt it about halfway though. I wasn't feeling the pain near the end though.

So tips on how to stretch that area or reduce the pain or just tell me what's going on, please? Ready, Set, Go!

    Thanks!

    C25K Noob!
    Hey guys!

I plan on starting the C25K plan on Thursday (I do WeightWatchers, and Thursday is the start of my week, so I want everything sync'd up!) and was wondering if anyone runs with their dogs? I really want to run with my mutt puppy, but he's only 8 months old and I have heard that you shouldn't run more than a mile with a dog under 2 years. I guess I could take one of my Labradors, but my Labs are either terribly lazy or still prone to bad behaviors on lead. Last thing I need is Calypso randomly stopping to sniff a mailbox and toppling me!

2.75 miles - done. I actually could have easily gone 3 or further, but I am enjoying the slowness of this process. It is cold and raining here today. I am grateful for my treadmill.
